Types of Breast Surgery
Breast surgery is a surgical art performed by plastic surgeons. A three-dimensional visualization is necessary to assess the possibilities for your situation. As you discuss your concerns with Dr. Hobbs, you will learn what is best for you.
Hypoplasia, or under development of the breast, may require breast implants to achieve a more normal size. Saline or silicone implants are available. A consultation with Dr. Hobbs will give you the particular options concerning your situation. See our breast augmentation page for details on the exact procedure.
When a woman’s breast tissue becomes too much for her comfort, it may be best to consider a breast reduction. This procedure helps correct back pain, neck pain, grooving of the shoulders due to bra straps, rashes under the breast and difficulty getting clothing to fit. The benefits of this surgery are reduction in the weight of the breast and improvement in upper body mechanics. Many asymmetrical breast sizes can be corrected to obtain better symmetry. The position of the breast on the chest wall is elevated to a more youthful position. Further details will be discussed in your consultation with Dr. Hobbs.
Raising the breast from a drooping or pendulous position, by removing excess skin, is called a mastopexy. Drooping breasts may be the result of age, pregnancies, or excess weight. A breast lift, by a qualified plastic surgeon, can enhance your overall shape and figure. By using existing tissue to create volume and removing excess skin, the procedure returns the breast to a more youthful size and shape.
Occasionally, a man will develop enlarged breasts which can be a source of embarrassment for him. Depending on the individual’s problem, there are several gynecomastia treatment options available to correct the appearance. This will have to be discussed with Dr. Hobbs.
